Barley's Smokehouse in Grandview held their 8th annual Mini Real Ale Festival on Saturday and as it has been in the past, it was a really good event. Last year I would have described it as a great event, but this year's, while still really really good, seemed like a bit of a letdown.

The biggest issue may have been the start time. 11am is really early for a day of drinking to start. I get it, they wanted the festival crowd out of there in time for the dinner crowd, but how about noon to 4? The bulk of the crowd seemed to come after noon anyway and I think it contributed to the slower than usual ticket sales.

The beer selection was very impressive as usual, but there seemed to be some notable absences.  No Great Lakes, only one Bell's selection, and Left Hand Brewing sent the wrong keg - Oops. It seems Great Lakes didn't have time to participate, but no Lake Erie Monster was a disappointment.

On the bright side, there were some beers that were a very pleasant surprise for me. Ohio Brewing Co's "Twice Bitten" strong ale was really nice, and Thirsty Dog's "Hop Dog" was especially good. It's a pale ale made with Belgian yeast, so it has a nice blend of that Belgian flavor along with a flavorful American pale ale.  Kudos.

Don't get me wrong - I'll attend this event every year for as long as they have it. You can't get this many beers on cask at one time during many other events, and no other event in Columbus. If you like cask beers, this is one event in Columbus not to be missed.

Don't forget that Barley's Mini Real Ale Festival is this Saturday, May 22 from 11am to 3pm. There are still (so it seems) a very limited number of tickets available. The festival features 17 beers from all over the country, all on firkins, for a unique tasting experience.

I'm especially looking forward to the Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti and the Left Hand Brewing 400lb Monkey. It's going to be tasty!

Details on the event and ticket information are available here: http://www.barleysbrewing.com/smokehouse/

Columbus Brewing Company has announced a list of events they'll be participating in for May. Seems like they'll be a busy bunch:

  1. May's Hop Odyssey beer is now available. "Rhapsody" is a very nice Pilsner with a huge hop presence, which makes it really tasty. Be sure to get your hands on some before it's gone.
  2. This Friday, May 14, you can find CBC at the Kroger in Brewer's Yard for a beer and food pairing with chef Meredith Evans. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.
  3. On Saturday May 22, CBC will be at Barley's Mini Real Ale Festival. This is a great event to try many different ales direct from the firkin. Limited tickets are available here.
  4. Later on the 22nd, CBC will be at the North Market's Apron Gala. $75 per person gets you in the door and includes drinks and food sampling from the vendors in the North Market. More details here.
  5. If you're headed north on the 22nd, CBC beers will also be featured at Fathead's Heavyweight Brewer's Brawl in N. Olmstead. Over 50 beers from 25 breweries will be there. More details here.
  6. If you make it past the 22nd, you're doing well, and you can join CBC for the Local Brews and Local Foods event at the North Market on the 26th. Food, beer and music all from local vendors. More details here.
  7. Last but not least, CBC will be pouring at the 1st Annual Columbus Beerfest on Memorial Day weekend (28th and 29th). The festival promises to be quite good, so get your tickets now. More details and tickets available here.
Tired yet? Can't wait to see what they have in store for June!

As we mentioned earlier, "Big Brew" was held at the Columbus Brewing Company on May 1, 2010. Home brewers from all over the area came to brew an American Wheat Beer.  Nearly 25 home brewers participated and almost 150 gallons of beer were produced. The event was really fun and the folks at Columbus Brewing Company are to be commended for putting on a great event. Watching brewmaster Eric Bean and crew roast a pig, and subsequently eat the pig's ear, was a true highlight.

The music in the video was provided by our friends The Wet Darlings. The song is "Vampires" (not necessarily a comment on home brewers!) from their upcoming EP "X". You can check them out here: http://www.thewetdarlings.com.

Let us know if you're in the video and we'll tag it appropriately.

Columbus Brewing Company's "2010: A Hop Odyssey" series continues with May's limited offering, "Rhapsody." It's described as a Czech style pilsner with a huge hop presence. Sounds like a great summer beer to me (although don't forget about Summer Teeth!). There's a tapping party this Thursday at the CBC Restaurant:

Tapping Party:
Thursday, May 6 at 5pm
Columbus Brewing Company Restaurant
525 Short Street, Columbus, Ohio
Happy hour prices from 5pm-7pm with the actual tapping at 6pm.

If you haven't been to a beer tasting and a movie at Clintonville's Studio 35 yet, you really need to.

This may have been one of the most fun events I've been to in a long time. The tasting was great, featuring 10 of Columbus Brewing Company's beers, including some rarely seen ones.  Brewmaster Eric Bean was there to talk everyone through the samples, and I've listed some of the highlights and news from CBC after the jump.

We're starting to get plans together to organize some trips to visit regional breweries. It's a long and complicated task, but we wanted to ask everyone for their input before we get too far along. The survey below will help us plan the first few to meet the wants of those who would come along, so if you're interested, please take a second to complete the survey. It's only 8 questions and should take only a minute or two.

And, if you take the survey, then register on our site, you can win a fabulous Columbus Brewing Company Uncle Rusty's Imperial Red Ale t-shirt!  We'll draw one random winner next Wednesday morning!

There are two great beer events coming to Columbus in the month of May.  Being on back-to-back weekends, it's shaping up to be a fun month.

First up is Barley's Mini Real Ale Festival on May 22nd.  Held at Barley's Smokehouse in Grandview, this event always is one not to be missed.  Great beer, great food and a great setting.  Not a lot of details available yet, but we'll post them as they become available.  More info on Barley's and the festival here: http://barleysbrewing.com/smokehouse/index.htm

The next weekend (Memorial Day weekend) brings the first Columbus Beerfest to town at the Convention Center.  Held Friday May 28 and Saturday May 29, the 2-day festival is boasting an impressive list of beers.  They are also offering a VIP session with food pairings and a more intimate setting with the breweries.  Tickets are available now.  Use coupon code FACEBOOK or TWITTER to save $5 per ticket.  http://columbusbeerfest.com

Columbus Brewing Company's fourth beer in their "2010: A Hop Odyssey" dubbed "Uncle Rusty" is set to launch tomorrow night, April 1.  The beer is listed as an Imperial Red Ale.

There will be having a tapping party for Uncle Rusty at the CBC Restaurant and at Bob's Bar on April 1st.

Select locations around town will also be pouring Uncle Rusty. Due to the incredible response to our Hop Odyssey beers, CBC has stepped up production of Uncle Rusty. Be sure to give it a try while it lasts.

Also launching tomorrow is CBC's Summer Teeth: a crisp, unfiltered kellerbier. This traditional Bavarian style beer originated from the small artisanal breweries of Franconia, where Kellerbier is still a favorite beverage in the local beer gardens.

Summer Teeth will be available April through August in bottles and on draft around town.
